| 1. Names are very important in Maguire's writing. Why do you think he chose the name "Candle"? What is the significance of fire in this story?
2. Compare and contrast Candle and Elphaba.
3. Mother Yackle, Nanny, and Princess Nastoya are aging and present in this story as well as in Wicked. What further insight into these characters is gained by reading Son of a Witch?
4. In your opinion, what is Mother Yackle and what is her role in Liir (and Elphaba's) life?
5. At the beginning of "The Service" Maguire speaks about character and consciousness of one's own life. What do you think the underlying message is regarding character and consciousness, and ultimately wickedness in the world?
6. Maguire continues this conversation about character by focusing on the birth of Elphaba. Elphaba is a central character in this story even though she is not present. What does this say of Liir's attachment to Elphaba, her mothering skills, and her personality?
7. What is the significance of Liir's search for Nor and his lack of success in finding her?
8. Do you feel that Liir gets his happy ending? Why or why not? | |
